This project is giving me fits. I think it’s a good idea and I feel that it is a unique idea, but I think the original flow of how I laid it out on paper, so to speak, is not the way I want to go. So tonight, I decided to stop fiddling with the story and take all of the elements, explode them into their base components and then re-order them in a way that made sense to me using a mind-mapping program. I thought about things like:
- How did I want to open the story to my readers?
- In the original, I had a lot of narrative and not as much dialogue, why?
- Why not throw all of my characters together in the first chapter?
- Where did I really want this story to go?
This is the first book of a series, but the end of the series is elusive to me, and that makes crafting the end difficult, but one thing I do know is that I need to rewrite this book from the very beginning. I’m not going to try to save what I have, but start fresh. With a fresh re-telling and see what falls out of it.
Maybe, the end is simply that it isn’t a story conducive to being written down, but in my head it is a vibrant world with a lot of potential.
So we’ll see where it takes me.
And it gives me something to do while we wait word on Sacred Tree: Awakening.
